Happy Adoption Day!

in Boys will be Boys, Family, Parenting

6620601341061-300x225Nine years ago today we formally and officially adopted the boys. For the most part our adoption was status quo. Earlier in the process we had some bumps and had to sink a small fortune into attorney fee’s so that we could ensure that the adoption day would come. I’m not quite sure how the laws have changed, but back then the birth mother was given a shit load of rights and chances and the adoptive parents had to sit idly on the sidelines hoping and praying that things fell in their favor. I can remember countless days that we drove our weekly trek to downtown LA for “reunification services” only to have the birth mother not show up. It was frustrating for me and horribly painful for the kids yet we had to do it or the burden of not following through fell on our shoulders.

Through out it all we had a wonderful and amazing Social Worker who guided us from day one until this moment. She held our hands when things got rough, calmed our fears when things got scary and pushed us through when we felt we were in over our heads. She had more faith in us than we did and I’m so grateful for the time and energy she gave to our case.

And most importantly, we have to thank our families. They accepted our kids from day one and never wavered in their love or support of them. In the beginning everyone was a little worried about how Great Grandma Doerr was going to be around our kids. She was a devout Catholic and although I’m sure she had her opinions on my and Cheryl’s relationship, she never said a word about it. The first time we brought the kids over so she could meet them I introduced her as Eileen (remember, the kids were just our Foster kids at this point and we had only had them a few weeks) she looked at the kids rather sternly and said “don’t call me Eileen, I’m Grandma.” And that was that.

Every family has their ups and downs and ours is no exception but somehow we managed to make it through and here we are, one family.

I tried to add the kids’ Christmas pictures for the past 9 years but WordPress wasn’t having anything to do with it. So here are a few of them, all out of order and sized completely wrong. It’s the thought that counts!

Thank you Bill! No matter what the roller coaster has been, it’s obvious that we all belonged together!
