He’s Moving Up (and out!)

in Boys will be Boys, Family, Parenting

8a6f11e53fe5eb41cc197a374f64465bPeople ask what Frankie wants to do when he graduates and I answer “move out.”

It’s true, that’s what he wants to do. It’s what he aspires to.

His desire to move out started over a year ago and, in all honesty, we haven’t done anything to talk him out of it. Mostly because it’s a good idea and I truly respect his decision. The expectations we have in this house don’t align with the ones he thinks we should have and neither party is going to back down on any of those demands. Why should he stay here when rules/expectations/chores and his family make him so unhappy? It’s like playing poker, if you aren’t happy with the cards you have been dealt, you throw them down and ask for new ones.

That’s exactly what he is doing and I couldn’t be prouder of his decision.

Staying will only make him more miserable and in turn, that makes us more miserable.

So, when most parents are busy looking into colleges for their graduating high school seniors, we are looking at rooms for rent. Some kids have the desire for college, others take off for a career, others just try to find their way in life. That’s kind of what Frankie is doing and I am totally okay with it. I don’t think there should be rules or expectations as to what path they choose to follow once they get out of high school, as long as it’s something they want to do, I am all for it.

(But I have to insert a caveat here; I’m all for it as long as I am not funding it. Meaning, take as long as you want to figure it out just don’t expect to be sitting on my couch eating Doritos while you search for your inner happiness.)

In a few short weeks we will be packing boxes and helping Frankie start a new chapter in his life.

We are pretty excited for him.

Sorry to hear that he is so set out to be on his own. I wish him the best, and hope he’ll surprise us all.

Kathy- I think he will surprise us. And it’ll be good for him to stand on his own two feet and deal with lifes expectation instead of ours. I think he will learn a lot and eventually adapt and be just fine!
