Jennifer Knapp wrote Andrew a letter and I was jealous. Real jealous!

in Concerts, Cool Things

IMG_7303I love music.

You only have to check out my side bar for the amount of concerts I attend to figure it out.

Of course, I love my Go Go’s and Def Leppard, but my day to day music surprisingly isn’t all 80’s. While I adore many (many) genres of music, I gravitate towards singer songwriters. Those are the folks I listen to late into the night.

Patty Griffin

Josh Radin

Brandy Clark

For whatever reason something in their music hits me in the heart. I hear their lyrics, I feel the melody…it sounds stupid, but it’s true.

In 2010 I discovered the wonder of Jennifer Knapp. After hearing her album Letting Go it became a constant on my playlist (seriously, to this day I still listen to it at least 5 times a week.) Jennifer was a highly regarded Christian singer before coming out in 2010. Once she came out, the church pretty much disowned her. It’s a sad, but very thought provoking story. You can see her recent comments on it HERE.

FullSizeRenderIn 2010 I played the shit out of the Letting Go record so Andrew learned to love it as much as I did. There is a song called Dive In on the album that he was particularly drawn to. The song is about falling in love, coming out, being yourself…but in Andrew’s mind it was about losing the fear and giving it all to swimming. During a meet and greet at her concert we told Jennifer about Andrew’s love of the song and she was not only kind enough to autograph a poster for him but she also called him on the phone before her show and the dedicated the song Dive In to him during her concert! It was an amazing experience for all of us and Andrew was deeply moved and he wrote her a letter to thank her for everything and to tell her how much her music meant to him.

We kinda thought that was the end of it.

Fast forward three years to last week when Andrew received a hand written note from her! I saw her name and address on the envelope and it was all I could do to not rip it open to see what was inside! She wrote him a beautiful, thoughtful letter that brought tears to his eyes (shut up, he’s sensitive!)

What an amazing, awesome, wonderful and thoughtful human being.

I’m not sure who decides who is in and who is out when it comes to being a Christian, but I am pretty sure being a lesbian shouldn’t un-qualify you. How you interact with humanity, your belief in Faith, being kind and compassionate, those are the things that define being a “good” Christian and I think Jennifer Knapp is a pretty darn good one.

Jennifer’s newest album Set Me Free is wonderful too! Check it out here!

And if you want to read more about Jennifer’s story, read her book!

Only you and God decide if you are his. Not the church. So I hope Jennifer just keeps being exactly who she is because she is amazing.
And speaking of amazing I just love Andrew. He has always been the sweetest most compassionate kid. And I’m so glad to see that has grown with him as he’s becoming a man. You’ve done good :)
