Phil Robertson -vs- A&E. My opinion.

1497589_10152091313433291_466832174_nFirst off, you need to know that I don’t watch Duck Dynasty.

I also do not own a One Direction album.

I guess that makes me un-hip in todays day and age.

But I’m gay and whenever there is any type of gay scandal, my phone lights up, my e-mail floods and everyone wants to know my opinion.

So I’m writing my opinion. Boring as it may be.

I don’t have a problem with this Phil Robertson guy. He is allowed to feel what he feels and say whatever it is he wants to say.

And A&E also has the same right to suspend him or fire him for what comes out of his mouth.

I don’t think the problem is what he said, it’s how he used his public forum to say it. He is an employee of A&E and the interview was a part of his job duties. I know that it’s weird to think of it being a job, since in reality TV you are ‘hired’ to be yourself. Drawing a line in the sand as to when your personal opinion becomes a job liability is sometimes hard, but in this case it wasn’t. He was promoting the show in that article, not putting on a sermon. It would be like a teacher standing up in front of their classroom and integrating their personal beliefs into the religion portion of their History segment. Or better yet, telling the class that evolution is B.S. and that instead kids should learn about creation from the Bible.

It’s the separation of Church and State and no matter how much you want to pipe in, you can’t do it without risking your job.

In PTA I am not allowed to support political causes or people. It would be wrong of me to express my personal thoughts on either subject while wearing my PTA hat. My job is to share information as uniformly and neutrally as I possibly can. That doesn’t mean I can’t have strong feelings one way or the other, it just means that while in that PTA role, I am not allowed to interject my personal thoughts or feelings on the subject.

And there is a sensitivity issue as well. Paula Deen got fired for admitting to using the “N” word 27 years ago. There are just subjects that you mind your P’s and Q’s about. I mean, who wants to be that guy in a party that inadvertently blabs out something offensive and instantly alienates half the guests?

You don’t want to be that guy.

Nobody likes that guy.

So was he wrong? Not really.

Was it insensitive? Yep.

A&E has to look out for ALL of it’s fans. Not just the Duck Dynasty folks. And advertisers. They pay the way. Literally. And those advertisers are looking out for the fans of their products. If they alienate them…suddenly they don’t have a brand or product or company anymore. It’s a vicious circle and anyone with half a business mind can see why A&E did what they did.

So, please feel free to speak your mind. It’s our right, but don’t be upset when the hammer comes down (or someone punches you in the face…) because for as much as you have the right to say what you want to say, people have the right to react to it as they wish.

There. My opinion.

You asked for it, you got it.

Now feel free to leave your rebuttal in the comments.

You’re one of the reasons I miss blogging. Agree 100 percent.

Catherine – You should blog again! That’s how we met and started dating. Oh wait, maybe I just dreamed that last part!

Also, now that I think about it, you sell yourself short. Or maybe other people do. I guess I’ve “known” you long enough that you are just a wife and mother. Just like your wife is a wife and mother. I think of you of my blogging friend who lives in California and might potentially put me up for a night were I to visit. So there’s that. I’m not going to call you and be like, OMG THERE IS A GAY SCANDAL. I’m not sure what that says about me, or you, but, there’s that.

Yes! We already discussed your visiting as long as our spouses approve of at least one night of you and me hitting the town and drinking! As for the gay thing, I think I’m one of the few gay people they know so I am the in house expert on all things gay. I don’t mind, as long as they realize I am an expert in a lot of things, not just the gay one (or so I think…)

Everyone has a right to their opinion but everything that comes up doesn’t need to come out – we are all in this world together and hatred has no place in it at all! Hopped over from BloggyMoms – Happy Holidays!

Antionette~ I 100% agree. Just because it’s written (depending on how you read it) in a book doesn’t mean you have the right to throw stones. Thanks for stopping by!
