PTA gives me a headache

ptaI am a PTA mom.

Sometimes I say that a little more proudly than others…

I have been in PTA for the past eleven years in an assortment of schools and in a multitude of positions.

To say I have given a tremendous amount of time to this organization would be an understatement.

Just recently I had someone tell me if I quit PTA I’d have more time to volunteer.

Hmmmmmmm…Considering PTA is the largest volunteer organization in the Nation, I kinda thought I already was volunteering.

Stupid people.

If I can be honest, my reasons for being on PTA are mostly selfish. It started with me wanting people to get to know me for me before they categorized me as “The Lesbian Mom.” Not that being the lesbian mom is a bad thing, it’s just that it could be a bad thing to some people and I didn’t want my kids to have to deal with that. I’d rather have them deal with me being the good mom who helps out at school and just happens to be a lesbian. You get the idea.

Once  people got to know me and the novelty of being the lesbian on the board wore off, I stayed involved because I enjoyed meeting people. After you give up a career and you find yourself at home staring at four walls and only interacting with children, you crave some adult time. I’ve enjoyed the fun times and the many great people I now get to call friends that I met along the way.

But, it can’t all be about you. Or me, for that matter.

PTA is hard work. It’s not an organization you can join and just hope to float along, at some point you are gonna have to roll up your sleeves and get down to business. There has to be that second level of motivation to get you through those 2am runs to Walmart because you ran out of poster board for a sign you need done by 8am. I don’t care what anyone says, PTA is a sacrifice where there is little return on your investment. You do not reap the rewards or the glory of your labor, your commitment is truly an unselfish act.

And I was okay with that until this week.

This week I am frustrated. And, since I am on my pity pot, I am also feeling under appreciated. I figured I’d add that in there as long as I was complaining.

We all have a goal to make money so we can purchase valuable resources for the students. To me it’s a no brainer, to others it’s a war. The red-tape is annoying and frustrating and it’s made me quite pissy.

For the record, I am not an effective leader &/or participant when I am pissy.

I plan on riding out my pissy-ness and I’m sure by next week I’ll be back at it and pounding the pavement to get shit done, but for right now I’m just gonna put it on the back burner and go watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

This is good timing cause RHOBH was good this week!! Whaaaaaaat?? Hellooooooo! Merry Christmas!! You could have missed one of the best lines of the season. Plus!! Why does your Bagina have a tail? It doesn’t get any better than that! Had you been messing with PTA stuff , being under appreciated, you would have missed it all. I say lay low for a bit, then they will realize how much you do for the school and shape up!!

That episode was filled with great quotes! I just loved the akwardness of the over enthusiastic pole dance instructor. “Whaaaaaaaaaaaat! Helloooooooooo! Merry Christmas!” I think that is going to be my new catch phrase.

My original comment is now in the abyss aka “the internets”. I’m sure you are appreciated, but people are more apt to complain rather than pat someone on the back. So.. *huge pat on your back*. The world needs good volunteers like you.

Awwwwwww! Thanks Bonnie! You are so sweet! Thanks for the pick up! The next day I dusted off my ego and put on my big girl panties and got back to work. I am a glutton!
